This collection of essays on diverse works of Renaissance drama as they have been reimagined for modern stage and film is by Dr. Arnie Preussner, Professor of English Literature at Truman State University. They are the result of over thirty years of careful, critical study and insightful teaching of great authors of the Renaissance period in English Literature: Shakespeare, Jonson, Marsten and others. Dr. Preussner knows Renaissance drama inside out, upside down, synchronically and diachronically. He has taught every single Shakespeare play on record and has seen almost all of them in multiple live performances. Dr. Preussner has routinely travelled to London or Colorado or Ontario to see the latest stagings of Jonson or Fletcher or their peers. In the essays gathered here, he has articulated with great clarity exactly how a particular production plays off earlier productions, how it bends or refuses to bend the text. In short, he has
an amazing command of the materials that are the focus of the essays presented in this book.
Dr Arnold Preussner was born and raised in Chicago and received his Bachelor's degree from Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, his M.A. and Ph.D. in English Literature from the University of Colorado, Boulder, the latter in 1977. He began teaching at Truman State University (then Northeast Missouri State University) in 1988. He has held numerous NEH fellowships for specialized study in various aspects of Renaissance studies. He has authored numerous articles and reviews for journals like Shakespeare Quarterly, Literature/Film Review, Muse, Bestia and others. Sadly, Dr. Preussner, or Arnie, as those of us who knew used to called him, passed away one month after the publication of this book, in May, 2010.
